South Georgia - Falklands

The Falkland Islands administer South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands by the UK Civil Commissioner who represents the Queen of England. The defense for these areas is provided by the United Kingdom. South Georgia is located in the South Atlantic Ocean approximately 863 miles from the Falkland Islands. It has an overall area of approximately 1,600 square miles. South Georgia is predominantly a mountainous region with 11 peaks that reach over 2,000 meters high. The slopes of these peaks are rutted with deep gorges and filled with glaciers. The islands receive income from postage stamps that are produced in the United Kingdom, although these territories have revenues of less than $300,000 and expenditures of more than $500,000.
South Georgia, like the Falkland Islands consists of gneiss and argillaceous schisms and shows no trace of fossils. They are merely a surviving piece of a greater mass of land that has vanished. Historians believe that this indicates a former extension of the Andean system.

The climate often varies, mostly with westerly winds throughout the majority of the year. Periods of calm winds are experienced and virtually all precipitation in this area is in the form of snow. Most of the islands in this area rise steeply from the ocean and are mountainous terrains. South Georgia itself is mostly a barren land with only the steep mountains covered with glaciers as landscaping. The South Sandwich Islands contain many active volcanoes. All the islands in this area have such widespread weather conditions that reaching them by ship is very difficult. The north coast of South Georgia however, offers many bays that are large enough to provide for good anchorage. It was also discovered over the past few years that reindeer are quite active on the island of South Georgia.

Journeys, often done by ocean cruise, offer a glimpse into a beautiful snow covered area alive with penguins, icebergs and other Antarctic life. Current weather and ice/snow conditions will determine just how far you can explore these areas and expert guides are normally available to lead you along as you marvel at the beauty of your surroundings in this magical wintry area. There is also an abundance of fishing done in the surrounding waters. Many people make their income from fishing in the Antarctic. Whales, seals and many seabirds thrive in the Antarctic and can be viewed from South Georgia and the Falklands. Whether you are enthralled at the prospect of taking a winter voyage for the landscaping views or you simply want to see the penguins frolicking about, this area is a sight to behold and unlike any other on earth.
